Sensory Rooms

In short, a sensory room is more specialized than a wellness center. It is designed to help students regulate sensory input so they can calm their bodies, focus, and participate in learning. Sensory rooms are commonly used for students with autism, ADHD, sensory processing challenges, developmental disabilities, or emotional regulation needs. Sensory rooms can be equipped with controlled lighting, sound/acoustic materials, swings, fidgets, soft furniture, padded mats, beanbags, and other calming tools.

The simplest distinction is:

A wellness center supports emotional and mental wellness.
A sensory room supports sensory and body regulation.

In many K–12 schools, the two spaces can overlap. For example, a wellness center might include a small calming corner with fidgets and soft seating. But a true sensory room is usually more equipment-based, more structured, and more closely tied to special education with support plans and services.
