Wellness Centers

A Wellness Center is typically a dedicated and staffed room that supports the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of students in a school. It provides students with access to caring adults in a safe calming environment where counseling or health-related resources and services help students manage stress, practice self-regulation, build resilience, and develop healthy habits in their daily lives.

Sensory Rooms

In short, a Sensory Room is more specialized than a wellness center. It is designed to help students regulate sensory input so they can calm their bodies, focus, and participate in learning. Sensory rooms are commonly used for students with autism, ADHD, sensory processing challenges, developmental disabilities, or emotional regulation needs. Sensory rooms can be equipped with controlled lighting, sound/acoustic materials, swings, fidgets, soft furniture, padded mats, beanbags, and other calming tools.

The simplest distinction is:

A wellness center supports emotional and mental wellness.
A sensory room supports sensory and body regulation.

In many K–12 schools, the two spaces can overlap. For example, a wellness center might include a small calming corner with fidgets and soft seating. But a true sensory room is usually more equipment-based, more structured, and more closely tied to special education with support plans and services.

Calming Corners

A Calming Corner is a thoughtfully designed area within a K–12 classroom or learning space that gives students a safe, quiet place to practice self-regulation, manage stress, process emotions, and regain focus. It may include soft seating, sensory tools, visual breathing guides, calming activities, and simple reflection prompts. The purpose of a calming corner is not punishment or isolation, but to help students develop emotional awareness, coping skills, and readiness to re-engage in learning.

Privacy Pods

A Privacy Pod in education is a compact, enclosed or partially enclosed space designed to provide visual and acoustic separation within a larger school room or area. It gives students and staff a quiet, comfortable setting for focused learning, independent work, small conversations, counseling check-ins, telehealth or virtual meetings, self-regulation, and short breaks from busy surroundings. In a K–12 setting, a privacy pod should support safety, supervision, accessibility, and student well-being while helping reduce distractions and create a sense of calm.
