In 2015, Compton voters approved Measure S, a $350 million bond measure to fund the construction of the new Compton High School, originally built in 1896. The new campus will open in August, 2025 for the beginning of the new school year and fall semester.
In 2016, the architectural firm, DLR Group was awarded the project. The construction project is supported by the building project management consulting firm Cumming Group, and the construction firm chosen was Swinerton. See DLR Group’s Virtual Design Tour.
In 2017, a strategy for funding opportunities was established in May, 2017 including a $10 million donation from the Grammy Award winning artist and philanthropist Dr. Dre (Andre Young) specifically for the school’s new Performing Arts Center.
The new school will feature keystone-shaped learning suites to support project-based learning and interdepartmental collaboration.Â
In 2023, D&D Learning Spaces was chosen by the District to be the furniture vendor and partner with DLR Group and Cumming to complete the interior and outdoor design and furniture installation for the entire campus.Â
In May 2025, D&D Learning Spaces completed the FF&E for the entire school. On May 22, 2025 the District celebrated the completion of the school by having a ribbon cutting ceremony and Dr. Dre was the featured speaker. The D&D team was there to cheer all the speakers and show our support to the school community and Compton Unified School District.

Studio 3:15 was designed for Corcoran High School’s emerging Games & Simulations pathway program to engage learners in the information communications and technology sector.
This space consists of two traditional classrooms, four large collaborative spaces, a large meeting room, an acoustically treated sound room inspired by Minecraft, and an administrative space with a small meeting area. When used for instruction, this facility can house up to 326 students, but when the collaborative space’s operable partitions are removed, these rooms are transformed into one large assembly space capable of holding up to 673 occupants.
Two large glazed bi-fold doors provide a visual and physical connection between this assembly space and an adjacent student quad, and open the new building to the rest of the existing campus. The student quad’s design was inspired by the facility’s program of Games & Simulations and is a callback to the popular game of Tetris. This design concept provides a playful series of walkways, planters, shade structures, and raised concrete benches meant to encourage exploration and creativity beyond the walls of the classroom.

Dallas Ranch Middle School Library
Project Description
The library needed an update because their shelving, old heavy wood tables and chairs were difficult to reconfigure for group collaboration, professional development, meetings or events. To solve the problem and to transform into a 21st Century Learning Space, we selected mobile and modular furniture focusing on flexibility, ease of configuration and comfort. VS America was the obvious choice to be our manufacturer partner because of their beautiful, flexible, modern and ergonomic educational furniture. We included mobile flip and nest tables, mobile seating for flexibility and soft seating for quiet reading and collaborative study. We also provided mobile shelving so new and exciting zones can be created for special literature events. The customer was thrilled with the fact that all of the chairs can now be stacked easily and moved for cleaning or to free up space for events that need a large floor area.

Washington Elementary STEAM transformed their staff lounge into a professional learning center while still keeping their staff lounge function on a daily basis. The new mobile and modular furniture allow for a variety of learning and community activities.
This conference room is designed with 100% mobile furniture. The tables can flip-nest and the chairs can stack to quickly clear the room for other purposes. The space is re-configurable to circle, U-shaped or rows.
Created as a functional element of the professional learning center at John C. Fremont Elementary School, D&D created two whiteboard walls to provide endless wall space for presenters. Working as the general contractor for the school, the scope of work included the installation of visual technology, new training furniture and the construction of the Claridge whiteboard wall. This room attracts many users and uses and serves as the staff lounge, meeting room, and professional learning center.
This newly designed staff conference space features seating for 12, and easily accessible power for charging mobile devices and personal electronics. There is easy access to pop-up HDMI inputs for display on the flat screen TV on the head of the table.
The Malucelli Conference Room was designed to support special school projects, as well as serve the district in a variety of ways throughout the year. The room is used as a staff conference room, board meetings and IEP meetings. The furniture features easily accessible power and is mobile-modular to be easily re-configurable for the diverse uses necessary each day.
The staff lounge was completed to provide a nice comfortable lunch room and retreat area for teachers and staff. New furniture was sourced to match the original cabinetry in a honey laminate color. Several zones were created for staff, including a lunch table, lounge area, work space and computer workstation.
The Centennial High School library was a minor upgrade, with new tables and chairs for the space. The design included traditional wood materials to tie into the existing bookcases.
At John Muir Middles School in Corcoran California, we updated their library with collaborative study zones that are easily reconfigurable. In an effort to provide comfortable seating in the library, the school decided to furnish the room with adjustable height tables and chairs. D&D recommended the RondoLift table and PantoMove adjustable chairs from VS America. The tables were manufactured to match the existing laminate color of the prior circulation desk. Both the tables and chairs are height adjustable, so the tables can easily convert to “sit-stand” workstations.
At West High School in Tracy California, we transformed a traditional library into a 21st century learning commons with collaborative study zones that are easily reconfigurable. This complete renovation included design, flooring, painting, furniture selection and installation as well as relocating existing metal shelving into a collections room for special student research. Furniture appointments included shelving by Wisconsin Bench, and mobile tables, mobile chairs and soft seating by National Office Furniture. The result is a beautiful, functional and agile learning space that will inspire every student that enters.

From conception to completion, we worked with the builder, district personnel and our manufacturers to create this beautiful learning space, complete with a whimsical presentation stage and stadium soft seating. This is truly a learning commons that will spark the fascination of every child that enters.
Mobile and stationary shelving from Wisconsin Bench, mobile fabric stools from National Office Furniture, stadium soft seating from NirvaNivel. and mobile flip tables, chairs Hokki stools and drum tables by VS America.
The new library at Shasta Elementary school was installed during the bond funded modernization of the site. The new modern bookshelves feature Manitoba maple and are accented with school colors. The custom circulation desk draws attention as a focal point of the room.
The new library at St. Raymond’s School is heavily used throughout the day! This complete remodel features an expansive book collection, mobile-modular furniture and a computer lab.
In effort to provide collaborative learning spaces in the library, this project involved a soft seating arrangement with module mobile components to allow students to re-configure the space for smaller group projects.

Take a circa 1970 traditional library and transform it into a 21st century learning commons divided into unique learning zones.
Execution:
The new 21st Century Learning environment capitalizes on the digital age. The entire space was transformed with modern flat screen monitors, data projectors and screens, high speed data ports and USB / AC power outlets so students and mentors can collaborate together on team projects. We utilized state of the art technology furniture such as “huddle tables” with integrated mobile device / AV monitor power hub so students can see their ideas on screen in real time for collaboration. This new school community area has 9 zones: forum, design studio, group study area, personal study area, community campfire, gather zones, study booths, AV / U-shaped zone and huddle zones. Across these zones, the new library spaces will support student group work, private study space, mobile devices, and content creation tools.
Results:
By rethinking and upgrading the physical learning space to meet the needs of 21st century learning, students are inspired to meet up, work, collaborate and do research in groups, or individually and be able to utilize the latest technology for academic inquiry.
Frontier High School wanted to better meet the needs of students and to support technology in education. It was decided that the library would be transformed into a 21st century learning space. A team of stakeholders was assembled to meet the challenge. The team included: D&D, Groupwerk Inc., school administration, student input, and district facilities/construction staff. Through the hard work of the collaborative team the Quest Center was born. The vision involved taking an existing traditional library set up of rectangular tables and chairs and transform it into a 21st century learning space divided into unique learning zones.
Execution:
In the Quest Center, information is digital and the library is a site for teaching and mentoring, where librarians are active instructors and students work together on team projects. We utilized powered technology furniture that encouraged collaboration to meet the challenge. The Quest Center has six zones: research, collaboration, comfort, social, individual, and instruction. Across these zones, the new library spaces will support student group work, private study space, computing equipment, access to reserved material, and content creation tools. The librarian serves as the content expert, information technology service provider, and collaborator with students and faculty.
Results:
By redesigning the physical active learning spaces to meet the needs of 21st century learning, students have high speed wireless access, enhanced technology and ample room to spread out books for focus or reflection, spaces to meet and work in research and inquiry groups, and quiet areas for academic inquiry.
